Biography
Dr Liz FitzGerald is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute for Educational Technology at the Open University and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is module chair for 'HZVM882 Online teaching: evaluating and improving courses' and 'HZVM883 Teacher development: embedding mental health in the curriculum. She provides expertise in distance learning and teaching, and knowledge exchange and previously taught on the Masters (MA) in Online and Distance Education. She is also the EDIA (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility) champion for IET and a Mental Health First Aider, providing initial support and guidance to staff experiencing mental health challenges.
She was the lead designer and chair for the OU's Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and the founding Director of the LTI Scholarship Centre (LATIS) from 2018-2020.
Her research passions are equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, specifically the personalisation of technology-enhanced learning and the impact it can have on different kinds of learners. She has embraced the personal learner journey, by looking at tools, standards and policies which accommodate them. This has included using location-based learning (2009-2015), gaming (2016), policing (2018), law students and volunteers (2020-2021), professional development (2019-2023) and minority ethnic individuals and groups (2022-2025).
She is currently Principle Investigator (PI) on 2 externally-funded projects: DIGcapabilities: Fostering Digital Capabilities among youth (2024-2027, NORCE) and SMART: Supporting Mental health And Resource Tailoring (2005-2006, SEDA).
She has a number of PhD and EdD students, and is an external examiner for both EdD and PhD. She welcomes applications from those who have an EDIA background.
She is open to invitations to deliver keynote addresses and consultancy roles.
